MEXICO, WOMAN POWER ZONGOLICA

You know that feeling when you just can't start the day without a proper good coffee? Well, as we enjoy it, we thought we’d take a sec to think about where it came from.

So, let us tell you about this special brew

Well, it's a labour of love from a close-knit crew of 20 incredible women in Veracruz, Mexico's Zongolica region. The women are part of the Nahuas indigenous group, deeply connected to their heritage and roots. Growing up, they soaked in all the wisdom from their Abuelas and Abuelos, learning about everything from their home to the universe itself through some truly magical storytelling.

It’s on the land that they lived that Mexico Zongolica coffee, also known as WPZ, was born. And get this—the coffee farms in Zongolica are not just farms. They're like these eco-friendly hubs, working hard to keep everything in balance. From intercropping to forest conservation—all these smart moves to preserve the region's natural diversity.

The women make the coffee using hand-cranked de-pulpers, washing the beans, and then letting them bask in the sun on patios for a good 15 days. And guess what? Every single one of those 20 producers is all part of the production, sticking to the same practices on their own farms.

From Zongolica to Salford

Our coffee is then roasted by Heart & Graft, who have been roasting coffee right here in Manchester for ten years.

In 2012, James founded The Coffee Circle and set about learning the complex craft of roasting from his garage. Meanwhile, Sean, their resident coffee aficionado, became the youngest industry-certified coffee taster in the country, working previously for large commercial coffee roasters. Eager to create something special in Manchester, they launched Heart and Graft in 2015 with a clear goal: to make exceptional specialty coffee easy to enjoy and readily available to everyone.

Along with Kieron and Michael, their mission is to ensure that everyone feels welcomed into the world of purchasing and brewing really good coffee, by carefully selecting and roasting exceptional coffees that boast distinct flavours and origins.

So, next time you take a sip of your morning coffee, just remember the journey it took to get to your cup—from those hard working women in Zongolica, to a great team in Salford, to Madre today.
